An introduction to the Law Library
Library facilities
1. Helpdesk
In every Reading room you'll find a helpdesk with a member of the staff at your disposal. We will try to help you with all the problems you have, as long as it is linked to our library of course.
2. Copying
In this intermediate phase we have 2 different systems to take copies :
- The old system : In each reading room you will find a copier that works with a magnetic copy card. This card - with 10 copies - can be purchased for 2,5 EUR at the helpdesk. Copies may be added to a card by inserting 0,50 , 1 or 2 EUR in the money charger, located in the Reading room Thorbecke.
- The new system : the mifare student card. In each reading room you will also find a copier that works with your student card. First you have to charge a copy and print credit by using the vending machines. One can be found near the PC Room Paddenhoek, another one is situated on the ground floor, Universiteitstraat, near the beverage vending machines.
If your student card isn't operational yet, you can use a print and copy card. Those cards are distributed by means of the same vending machines used to charge your student card. The price, 2 euro, includes printing credit. The printing credit can be used for printing or copying. The card vending machine does not return any money. When you deposit 5 euro in the machine when purchasing a card, the remaining three euro (a card costs two euro) will have to be loaded to the card via a seperate action. If you don't do this, the remaining value will be lost.
3. Scanning
Scanning is free of charge, but you need a student card (or a print and copy card).
Scanning is possible at the printer/copier in the PC room at the entrance of the library but since it is prohibited to take library journals and books out of the library, this can only be used to scan personal notes. To scan, enter the card in the card reader of the OCE copier. Choose scanning. Enter your roll number. You will find your roll number on the front of your student card (eight digits). The card's value will remain unchanged. An e-mail will be sent to your UGent address, containing a link that enables you to download the scanned document. Please note, all documents will be removed from the server at midnight. As a consequence, you have to download the documents in time.
The new copiers - those that operate with your student card - also give you the possibility to scan. You have to press the button "send" and then fill in your own email-address. Press "OK", then "start" and the scan will be sent to the chosen email-address.
4. Printing
You can print as follows:
- Send a print job from a PC to the OCE copier/printer which is located at the PC room near the entrance of the Library.
- Slide your (charged) student card or your print- and copy card (see above) through the card reader.
- Choose printing and select your username and document from the list on the display.
- If you choose the wrong username, you will be paying for someone else and also receive his prints.
- For each printed page, 4 eurocents will be charged.
5. Borrowing policies

6. Interlibrary loan
Through the Inter-library Loan Service of the University Library, works can be borrowed from the collection of the University of Ghent and from external institutes. The ILL service can also be used to order photocopies of journal articles.
The request form is part of the Aleph catalogue, Interlibrary (ILL).
Choose "Aleph" in the right corner on the top of the page, than click on password in order to obtain
one by filling in your email address. Your password will be mailed to you.
In order to fill out the form, you will need to identify yourself by clicking on LOGIN.
After login, you can choose ILL, BOOK or ARTICLE to register the title, author, etc. of the publication you would
like to order.
Notification that books have arrived will be sent to the student's e-mail address. Books can be picked up at the desk in the Reading room Fredericq.
You must consider a delivery term of 2 or 3 weeks.
The requested items may only be borrowed if the library that has supplied the work does not object to this. In
other cases, items can only be used in the Library. The loan period depends on the conditions of the lending
library. If the user fails to return borrowed works by the due date, the University Library will pass on
administration costs and fines - charged to the University Library by the supplying library - to the user who is
responsible for the work.
Inter-library loans are not free of charge : See list.
7. The archive
Older books and periodicals may be stored in our archive.
This is the case if you notice the letter "K" at the beginning of the notation found in our catalogue
(for example : RBIB. K. PUB 320 BE 10).
In order to obtain a book from the archive : you can use the request form and sent it to Kristof.Debruyne@UGent.be or use the paper request found in the reading room Kluyskens.
8. Computer services
8.1. Workstations
The Library has 52 workstations, and several internet jacks.
All terminals in the library should be used for library purposes only. E-mail and word-processing is available at
the terminals in the Computer Class Room at the Paddenhoek.
8.2. Using a laptop in the library
At different seats in our reading rooms you can find electrical connections for your laptop.
8.3. Wireless connection to UgentNet
You can connect your portable on locations where you see the logo "WiFi UgentNet", is found. Here you can get wireless access to UGentNet and obviously also the Internet.
How ?- Obviously you need your own PC with its wireless adaptor present. Most wireless adaptors shouldn't give any trouble connecting.
- You mention in the settings that an automatic ip-address has to be obtained. In that way, you should get an IP-address in the range 172.16.x.x
- After that, you need to set up a VPN-connection. More info on this can be found on the helpdesk page on VPN.
- If all steps went well, you're connected to UGentNet and Internet.
