Biografie Florenz Volkaert (° 1995) studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit Gent (2018, summa cum laude) en behaalde een LL.M/MSc. in Rechtseconomie (2018-2019, bekroond met de prijs voor beste student) aan de Universität Hamburg, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam en het Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research in het kader van een Erasmus Mundus programma. Tijdens zijn rechtenstudie in Gent bracht hij ook een semester door aan de Universiteit van Waikato (Nieuw-Zeeland), waar hij de Law of International Trade Prize voor beste essay won. Verder heeft hij twee keer stage gelopen op het departement internationale handel van een toonaangevend internationaal advocatenkantoor. Sinds november 2019 is Florenz FWO Aspirant Fundamenteel Onderzoek bij het Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Vlaanderen en werkt hij aan een project met als titel "Vrijhandel inbedden. De regulering van de internationale handel in België (1860-1865)", met prof. dr. Dirk Heirbaut als promotor en prof. dr. Frederik Dhondt (VUB) als co-promotor. Zijn huidige onderzoeksproject richt zich in hoofdzaak op de geschiedenis van het internationaal economisch recht. Florenz is echter ook goed vertrouwd met het hedendaagse recht van de Wereldhandelsorganisatie, de economische analyse van het internationaal recht en de geschiedenis van het economisch denken. Daarnaast is hij geïnteresseerd in het raakvlak tussen empirisch rechtswetenschappelijk onderzoek en digital humanities, in het bijzonder netwerkanalyse en complexiteit.
Biography Florenz Volkaert (° 1995) studied law at Ghent University (2018, summa cum laude) and obtained an LL.M/MSc. in Law and Economics (2018-2019, receiving the award for best student in the program) from the Universität Hamburg, Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research as part of an Erasmus Mundus program. During his law studies in Ghent, he also spent a semester at the University of Waikato (New Zealand), where he won the Law of International Trade Prize for best essay. He furthermore interned twice at the international trade department of a leading international law firm. As of November 2019, Florenz is a PhD Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), working on a project at Ghent University entitled "Embedding free trade. The regulation of international trade in Belgium (1860-1865)" with Prof. Dr. Dirk Heirbaut (supervisor) and Prof. Dr. Frederik Dhondt (VUB, co-supervisor). As such, his current research project focuses on the history of international economic law. Florenz is, however, also well acquainted with contemporary WTO law, economic analysis of international law, as well as history of economic thought. He is furthermore interested in the intersection between empirical legal studies and digital humanities (in particular network science and complexity). .
