Ilya Kotlyar

Biography

Since his graduation from Moscow State University Law Faculty in 2008, Ilya Kotlyar's research covered a wide range of topics. All of them lie in the field of European legal history. The shared European legal tradition has always been the point of particular interest for him. He hold a Russian degree of the Candidate of Legal Science (rough PhD equivalent). The thesis, defended in Moscow in 2011, was dedicated to the concept of "medieval Ius Commune", with a particular stress on public law. In 2013-2016, he used his strong background in Roman law and Ius Commune in researching the topic of the influence of the Ius Commune on the law of succession of Scotland. The outcome was the successful PhD thesis defense in the University of Edinburgh in 2016. In 2017-2019, Ilya was working as a Post-doctoral researcher in Tilburg University. The focus of research was the law of collateral (pledge) in Roman Dutch law. From March 2020, Ilya is a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Gent Instituut voor Rechtsgeschiedenis. His is working on the FWO project, dedicated to the research of the origin, evolution and system of the medieval 'regulae juris'. The research is expected to end with the creation of an open database of 'regulae juris'.
