Brief CV:

I am currently working as a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy (Ghent University) on the topic of prison conditions, prison law and EU cooperation.

The current research activities focus on:
- The compliance of European states with international prison standards, in law and in practice;
- The organisation of healthcare in Belgian prisons;
- Access to legal counsel for pre-trial prisoners;
- The role of international and national inspection and monitoring bodies in preventing ill-treatment in prison;
- International standards on mentally ill offenders in prison.

The research is aimed at advancing scientific knowledge as well as providing added value for day to day practices in prison and prison policy. I have a preference for method triangulation and I have experience with interviews, dossier analysis, observations, legal analysis and descriptive quantitative research methods.

Besides my research activities, I’m a guest lecturer of criminal law and penology. Furthermore, I’m a member of the independent monitoring board of the Ghent prison. I'm holding a Ph.D in law (Ghent University), a Master of Law (Groningen University) and a Master of Science in Criminology (Ghent University).
