News and Events

On Wednesday 27 April 2022, the LLM-Programmes are pleased to invite you to the fourth guest lecture of the current academic year organized in cooperation with the Information Point Europa Direct and the Centre for EU Studies.

Title of the lecture: "Security in Europe: is there a world before, and a world after, 24 February 2022?"

Speaker:
Ambassador Pascal Heyman
(Permanent Representative of Belgium to NATO)

Moderator:
Prof. dr. Peter Van Elsuwege (Ghent European Law Institute)

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has fundamentally reshaped the political and military landscape on the European continent, with worldwide consequences to follow. How could it come this far? Could the war have been avoided? What will be its likely outcomes? What is the future Europe going to look like? Should we be afraid for our own security? While this is a conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is affected as well. How is NATO reacting and how can it continue to ensure the security and stability of its 30 Allies also in the future? Is NATO as relevant today as it was during the Cold War?
