Short bio

Stéphanie De Coensel is a PhD Researcher at the Institute of International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP) and is a part of the Department of Criminology, Criminal Law and Social Law of Ghent University (Faculty of Law and Criminology). She holds a Master of Laws (Ghent University, 2016) and has, during her studies, specialized in criminal law. Her doctoral research focuses on the legitimacy of counterterrorism measures in terms of subsidiarity, proportionality and legality. Especially the expansion of counterterrorism measures to the preceding phases of the radicalization process are of interest to the research, with a great focus on human rights issues and core notions such as the security-state, pre-crime, the risk society, overcriminalization, ultima ratio and lex certa. Next to the Belgian legal framework, comparative research on the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands is conducted, without losing the inter- and supranational framework out of sight. Alongside the role of researcher, Stéphanie also carries out supporting educational tasks and mentors several students. In addition, she is a member of the Commission of the Doctoral School of Arts, Humanities and Law of Ghent University.
