In 2012 Klaas Willaert graduated as Master in Law (summa cum laude) at Ghent University and obtained a Master in Maritime Science (summa cum laude) in 2013. His master theses focussed on the accession process of Serbia to the European Union (‘The accession process of Serbia to the European Union: a story of ups and downs’) and piracy in West Africa (‘Piracy in West Africa: the Gulf of Guinea as a new hotspot’).

In September 2013, Klaas became an assistant at the department of European, Public and International Law. He is preparing a doctoral thesis on maritime piracy under the supervision of Prof. dr. em. Eduard Somers and Prof. dr. Frank Maes. Furthermore, he supports the subsequent master program MSc in Maritime Science, organized by Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, coordinates the Port Management program and is a member of the steering committee for the annual Maritime Symposium.
