Yiannis Bamnios

Yiannis Bamnios is a PhD researcher at Ghent University, as of January 2026. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece and a Master of Advanced Studies in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy. His research interests and expertise mainly revolve around international humanitarian law, international human rights law and law of the sea. His research focuses on the law of naval warfare.
After graduating, Yiannis conducted his military service in the Artillery Branch of the Hellenic Armed Forces. For his service, he received the honorary rank of Lance Corporal, awarded to soldiers who have demonstrated high morality and excellent service. During his time in Geneva, he conducted an internship at the “How does law protect in war?” Online Casebook of the International Committee of the Red Cross, under the supervision of Professor Marco Sassòli. He was responsible for researching and drafting six new cases of international humanitarian law interest. Before joining Ghent University, Yiannis worked as a lawyer at the security and defence sector.
Yiannis is also a qualified lawyer, licensed by the Thessaloniki Bar Association. He has worked as a lawyer in a constitutional and human rights law firm, dealing with cases at both national and European levels.
