Zhonghua Chen

In 2020, Zhonghua Chen earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the school of International law at China University of Political Science and Law (Beijing). He subsequently pursued a Master of Laws in Public International Law at the same institution from 2021 to 2024, focusing his research on the Antarctic Treaty System, the law of the sea, and international environmental law. His thesis focused on the procedural rules applicable when a party to a dispute fails to appear within the framework of the UNCLOS dispute settlement mechanism.

During his studies, Zhonghua Chen interned at the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA), focusing primarily on cutting-edge issues related to the development of the Antarctic Treaty System, particularly the domestic legislation of various states concerning Antarctica.

In October 2024, Zhonghua Chen was awarded the joint funding from the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Ghent University to pursue his doctoral research at the Maritime Institute. His research topic is "Applying UNCLOS to Address Climate Change: Reinterpretation and Systemic Harmonization".
